Rallying from an 18 point deficit to start the 4th quarter, the Lady Dragons valiant comeback attempt fell just short in the 2019-20 season opener at Prosper Arena on Friday night. Prosper Senior Maddie Cleary, who scored 20 points to lead all scorers, sank a free throw with 5 seconds left to clinch a 48-44 win for the Lady Eagles.
Senior Jillian Sowell, District 5-6A’s Offensive Player of the Year last season, led the Lady Dragons with 19 points. Senior Allyson Medici scored 8 points and Freshman Camryn Tade sparked the 4th quarter comeback, scoring 7 points in her Lady Dragon debut.
Carroll dug a big hole for itself with a cold shooting 2nd quarter, managing only 2 points in the period, as the Lady Eagles raced to a 26-12 halftime lead. Prosper, a Class 6A Regional Finalist last season, extended the lead to 39-21 entering the 4th quarter.
The Lady Dragons finally broke through in the final stanza behind a relentless full court press fueled by the athleticism and hustle of Tade, Sowell, Kaelyn Riley, Brittney Flexer, Jordyn Sowell and Medici. Outscoring Prosper 23-9 in the quarter, the Lady Dragons scored more points in the final 8 minutes than the previous 3 quarters combined.
Carroll hopes to ride the momentum of the final quarter rally into Tuesday night’s home opener against Euless Trinity at the Carroll Senior High School gym. The Varsity tips off at 6:30pm while the JV plays at 5pm.
The Lady Dragon 9th Grade A Team opened the season with a 46-32 win over Prosper. Ria Singh scored 15 of her 19 points in the 2nd half while Ella Ferguson added 10 points.
