She still has work left to do with the Lady Dragons, but Jillian Sowell has now charted out her college basketball future.  She is headed for the basketball hotbed of Canyon in the Texas Panhandle.

One of 23 Southlake Carroll athletes to sign on the dotted line Wednesday morning on National Signing Day, Jillian signed a letter of intent with West Texas A&M, the 16th ranked NCAA Division II women’s basketball program in the nation.

One of the top scorers in Carroll history, Sowell is the Lady Dragons’ top points producer for the second straight season.  She has tallied 1,483 points in her four year career, including 204 career 3-point baskets.

The District 5-6A Offensive Player of the Year last season, Sowell led all North Texas Class 6A players with 111 3-pointers in 2018-19, averaging 18.7 points per game.

A Senior Captain, Sowell has been instrumental in leading the Lady Dragons to a postseason berth this season.  She scored 20 points in a crucial 33-30 win over Timber Creek and a season high 27 points in a 55-48 win over 5th place Byron Nelson last week.  Sowell shot 41% from 3-point range (9 for 22) in those two games.

Jillian plans to major in either business management or business marketing at West Texas A&M and will continue a family tradition of playing college sports.

Her mother, Kim, was a 3-year starter on Tulane University’s basketball team, ranking 7th on the school’s career rebounding list, averaging 12 points/8 rebounds per game on Tulane’s 1st NWIT team in 1994 and 13 points/7 rebounds on the Green Wave’s 1st NCAA Tournament team in 1995.

Her father, Jerald, played fullback for 10 years in the NFL, spending 9 seasons with the New York Jets where he had 47 receptions in 2004.  He amassed 3006 rushing/receiving yards and 14 career TDs at Tulane, holding the school record with a 98 yard TD run in his first college game against Alabama on Sept 4, 1993.

Jillian’s sister, Jordyn, is a Junior starter on the Lady Dragon basketball team.  The two are in their third season as Varsity teammates, leading Carroll to two straight postseason appearances.
